TM 125 rider Jim Davies extended his championship points lead at round 6 of the 2009 British 2 Stroke Championships which took place at Canada Heights this weekend.
With a series of calculated rides, to ensure enough was done to strengthen his championship standing without taking any uneccessary risks whilst still recovering from several broken ribs, Davies increased his championship points lead over his rivals once more.
With substantial rain fall during the tail end of the week the sandy circuit was extremely wet come Friday evening, however, Saturday morning greeted us with glorious sunshine and a light breeze, just what was needed to ensure the track would come good and another day of exciting 2 stroke action would ensue.
Jim was to be out on track in the first of the 125 Expert groups, with the circuit still drying some extremely wet 'boggy' patches were evident and this made the 'little' 125cc 2 stroke machines work hard for their living. However, the incredible TM machine powered thorugh the 'slop' and took Jim into the second place on times, good enough to ensure a decent gate pick come race time.
Jim's 'game plan' was simple...stay upright and score points, this theme was echoed through all three races on the card today. Race one saw Jim get an average start but within a few laps he was at the sharp end of the field, the track had become somewhat of a one line affair and making ground on anyone was difficult. As the race unfolded Jim had settled into fifth position, with his main championship rivals behind him and with wildcards and non championship contenders in front he rode his own race and stayed out of trouble until the flag.
Race two would see Jim launch the TM to the front end of the pack on the big uphill start, after the first turn mele and now running in second position he could taste victory, racing instinct took over and he hunted down the leader. With the TM's engine howling and the strong surge of power being evident on the uphill sections he slowly made ground and honed in on the front runner only to then make a small mistake, which could of resulted in a big crash. Once composure had been regained Davies decided that 42 points were better then none and settled down to take a comfortable second place result.
The start of race three would see Davies with work to do after slewing the TM sideways on the concrete start pad and instantly being pushed out by riders either side of him on the uphill drag to the first turn. Working away methodically on the difficult track Davies picked through the pack getting himself into a comfortable sixth position, with the track conditions becoming harder and with the choice of decent lines lessening Jim slowly closed the gap up to the next contender, with little time and with not wanting to take risks he once again settled for the points.
With three consistent, sensible rides Jim took Joint 3rd overall on the day but more importantly increased his lead in the championship, final results are not published as yet but Davies must now be nearing 150 points clear of his nearest championship rival.
TM UK would like to say well done to Jim and also to Bobby and 'the girls'.
Well done also to all the TM riders, Ben milward on his 144cc In-Chains TM, Mark Bland on his 125cc SPS TM, Anthony McGladdery, Josh Walker and Nathan Jacobs just to name a few of the numerous TM's that are appearing this year.
